I’m not going to tell you that my camera doesn’t take good pictures because it does…but only when I input the right information to make it produce good pictures.

It may shock you to know that my camera is not considered one of the “top of the line” camera bodies (gasp!). Granted, it looks massive with those big lens mounted on it and the pictures we’ve gotten from your sessions have been amazing. I agree! But it wasn’t just the camera that got us there… it was a number of very important factors.  It may shock you but my camera cannot take good pictures without you and me.

Equipment is very important when it comes to photography, having capable equipment and knowing how to operate the equipment in all situations is a must, you don’t have to have the most expensive equipment on the market either –I added a $40,000 camera to my wish list this year!
However, you do have to learn how to effectively use your camera and other equipment.

Think about it, everyone has a camera of some kind today even if it’s a cell phone camera so why should anyone hire a photographer? Photographers tend to know a little something about capturing an image in various situations and getting consistently great results. Isn’t that what you want from your portrait sessions—great images?
You can place your camera dial on the green box and fire away…sometimes the little light on the top (called a pop-up-flash) will pop up when it’s too dark but then you have that deer-in-the-headlights look. The camera doesn’t know how to get around this situation, it only knows that there isn’t enough light to light the scene you are trying to capture so it does what it knows to do…so much for my camera taking great pictures! I don’t consider that deer-in-the-headlight look to be fashionable at all, do you?

My camera is capable of taking great pictures because I have the expertise to use my gear (camera, lighting etc) to produce the desired image. I don’t allow the camera to do the thinking for me or to tell me how it’s going to capture an image…I tell my camera how I want it to capture an image and that’s generally one of the main reasons anyone hires a photographer. You want someone that knows how to capture you and deliver a finished product that has a WOW factor!

Anyone can point a camera and click the button, in fact this is the reason camera’s called “point and shoot” exist. They are designed so you can point the camera and shoot the image…no special skills or expertise needed.  BUT you also don’t get consistently great images:(.  Sometimes you get blurred, dark, odd colored images among other things…humnnn

Camera’s don’t know how to expose properly, compose properly, accommodate for various lighting situations such as low-light, capture someone’s personality or capture at just the right moment, edit images, interact with people, provide quality service etc…in green box mode they just know how to analyze a scene using their built-in sensor and deliver an average image. That’s all, just average. You hire a photographer because you want more than average—you want exceptional.

I’ve taken some great images of some beautiful people this year with my camera that takes good pictures…Yes, it’s true, my camera does take great pictures but not without you in front of it and not without me behind it. Have a wonderful New Year. Go exceptional in 2012, not average.

The weather has been great and I’m hoping to get in some outdoor shooting tomorrow at some fo the sessions. It’s fall in Dallas and we are going to rock the bold and beautiful colors of the season. Latest ‘snapshot’ adventure at Waikiki beach in Honolulu, HI. Having a wonderful time with my Canon’s. Have taken shots on and in the water. Just beautiful!
